꼬마 신랑이라는 독특한 소재와 김정훈의 능청스러운 연기에 힘입어 흥행에 성공하며, 1970년 ~1971년 2년간 연이은 속편과 아류작 등 김정훈을 주연으로 한 꼬마 시리즈 10편을 쏟아냈다.

원작은 TBC 드라마 《팔판동 새아씨》로, 드라마에서는 강남길이 꼬마신랑 역, 최불암의 부인인 탤런트 김민자가 새색시 역을 맡았었다.
