일본에서는 '구급구명실(救急救命室)' 또는 '구명구급센터(救命救急センター)'라 부르며, 이는 영국의 'A&E'를 의역한 어휘이다. 일본은 3차 의료기관을 중심으로 일반적인 '구명구급센터'와 중환자를 대상으로 한 '고도구명구급센터'를 운영하는 형태가 기본이다.

중국에서는 '급진실(急诊室, jízhěnshì)', '급구실(急救室, jíjiùshì)' 또는 '응진실(急诊室, jízhěnshì)'이라 한다. 특히 중국어로 '급진' 또는 '응진'은 '원인 불명의 상태에서 진찰'을 하는 것이라는 뉘앙스가 있고, '급구'는 원인이 밝혀진 질환에 쓰인다.
